Find the care you need. Hire who you want.

By Ruth Harrigan

I jokingly tell friends that when I hire a personal care assistant, I’m hiring an arm and a leg. This is because I have quadriplegia, paralysis in all four limbs, as the result of a spinal cord injury. When I hire an assistant, I seek someone who can help me with everything from meal preparation and personal care to paperwork assistance relative to my own employment.

disabled personal assistant job descriptionHaving a good personal care assistant – someone who is reliable, caring and flexible – has a real impact on my quality of life. Finding someone like this involves a process that includes placing ads, sorting through applications, completing several interviews and making the best choice I can from among those who apply. Because my career as an attorney requires time and attention, I’ve learned how to streamline this process without losing sight of the fact that spending a little extra time during the hiring process can save me a lot of aggravation later on.

Dear Friends,

The past 30 years of my life have been dedicated to helping and supporting people with disabilities and their families. This is my passion and I have been blessed to meet and rub shoulders with hundreds of people across the nation who have support needs. Their stories and experiences have changed the way I look at life and what the future holds for all of us.

Gerald NebekerHireMyCare.org was inspired by people who self-direct their supports. They typically need trustworthy and reliable staff to help them care for themselves, their children, parents, or other loved ones needing support. The old cliché that “good help is hard to find” is, unfortunately, a reality for many of these individuals and families. HireMyCare.org is also a personal resource to me personally. I have a child with an intellectual disability and an aging mother, both of whom live with me. My life mirrors the challenges that so many deal with, and my hope is that HireMyCare.org will be of help to you, too. It is an efficient and cost effective solution for people to find and manage care for themselves or their loved one.

I am committed, along with the HireMyCare.org team, to provide people needing support with all the tools necessary to help them hire the assistance they need. We are always looking to improve our services. If there are ways we can improve the HireMyCare.org so that it works better for you, please do not hesitate to contact us at [email protected]
